Give It a Rest

Where did the week go? Ever feel like that? Our days are filled with work, our nights are filled with extracurricular activities; family, church, sports leagues, homework, clubs and now, of course, Facebook, Twitter, blogs or computer time.

Take the time to “give it a rest.” Stop the treadmill, but don’t move on down your “to do” list. There are a lot of spiritual nuggets in this book, good stuff we trust that will bless you and give insight about pursuing God. But, don’t just read about the ways of God, don’t pack in more spiritual information and not learn to hear the voice of God for yourself.

God wants to talk to YOU. Stop and listen for His voice. Meditate. It’s not a scary word, or mystical practice. We need to clear the time to be alone time with God. We need to listen. Webster’s Dictionary defines meditate: to muse over, to contemplate, ponder, to engage in deep mental exercise directed towards a heightened level of spiritual awareness.

Make time this weekend to stop the noise and take the time to get in God’s presence. Luke 10:38-42 makes this point about the pace of life, and choosing what is important,

“As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, ‘Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.’ “But the Lord said to her, ‘My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.’” (New Living Translation)

These sisters welcomed Jesus into their home. But, Martha focused on the event – the big dinner. Mary chose Jesus . . . the one thing. And Jesus said that it (He) could not be taken away from her. Let somebody else do the work for a while. Sit down at His feet. Let Him talk to you for a while.

What do you need to hear from God today? What longings in your life would you tell your best friend, the person you trust the most? What might the Father say to you?

Give life a rest today, or this weekend. Choose to slow down, to listen, to meditate on the goodness of God. The One who breathed the first breath of life in Adam is still breathing life into His children today.

Get away from it all for this moment. Don’t share the time with anyone but God. He wants to speak to you…and put some things in your heart. There is no substitute for time alone with God.
