The Old or the New

Throughout my time as a Christian, I have heard and learned so many different revelations from teachers, preachers and reading the Word for myself. I praise God for all that we have available to us as Christians to ignite our journey with Jesus.

I want to briefly touch on the old and new covenant in the life of Christians. Let’s start with a well-known scripture for most of us:

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24

Stay with me…this is not a devotional about money. This is about replacing the old with the new. This is about us as Christians trying to serve two entirely different masters. Notice in Matthew, God’s Word, it says, “NO ONE CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS.”

Before Christ Jesus appeared on this earth, we served the covenant of the law: If you do this, God will do that. If you broke a law by sinning, you were required to sacrifice and clean yourself by a certain and specific demand in order to become whole and right with God again. It was a heavy yoke, and the burden of sin was placed upon us.

Moses delivered to the Hebrew community the Ten Commandments and the first covenant with his people. These commands were written on a stone tablet, and the laws made man sin conscious.

Yet, we see a new covenant begin to replace the old covenant at the appearance of Jesus Christ. Let’s look at Hebrew 8 and see what the Word reveals about the old and the new covenant.

“By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.” Hebrews 8:13

The writing in chapter 8 of the Hebrews says the first one is obsolete; it has been replaced with something better.

Think about it in this way: This (old covenant) is the difference between driving a 1925 car before power steering, power locks/windows, air conditioning and sufficient horse power was introduced. For its time, it was an incredible invention and began to change the burden of travel, delivery, farming and many other touch points of society.

However, a 2010 vehicle is superior in every capacity compared to the 1925 model. The 1925 is what we would now call an antique. We can admire the antique and appreciate where it came from, but compared to the new models of cars, it cannot perform as efficiently or as easily. The old vehicles have become obsolete for day to day commuting.

The new covenant moves from sin consciousness to Jesus consciousness. We no longer apply the law, but rather we celebrate the love that keeps no records of wrongs because of what Jesus bore on himself on the cross.

Are you still living and commuting in the old covenant? Does your life have the aroma of sweat and striving, or have you experienced the sweet aroma of grace and mercy of the new covenant, paid in full by Jesus Christ?

  1. That’s interesting..the scripture you pointed out…usually you hear believers addressing the “old covenant” as “being fulfilled (by Jesus)” not passing away/disappearing as that clearly states.

  2. Great point!
